Regulations for licentiate theses

Approved by the Faculty Board, 15.12.2006

  1.  These regulations relate to the scientific thesis that is required for a licentiate degree in accordance with Chapter 6, § 35 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 2006:1053) and Appendix 2 – Degree Ordinance.

  2. A thesis for a licentiate degree shall be based on independent research and be of a high scientific standard. A summary totalling approximately 250 words shall be attached to the thesis.

  3. A thesis for a licentiate degree shall, before a grade is awarded, be presented at an open seminar for postgraduate students and teachers at the department of the subject in question, as well as for other interested parties.

The seminar shall be led by teachers who set grades at postgraduate level (examiner). Special discussion leaders/opponents shall be appointed for the licentiate thesis. These individuals should be external, but it is the decision of the department in question. The seminar shall take place after the thesis has been made available for a period of three weeks, in accordance with section 4.

  4. The examiner shall be responsible for ensuring that the thesis, before a grade is awarded, is made available at the department for a period of at least three weeks. With regard to the scheduling of the seminar, the same regulations as for a doctoral thesis shall be applied. The examiner shall also be responsible for ensuring that the application to present the thesis, the name of the author, the name of the opponent, the title of the thesis and the summary as described in section 2 are submitted to the office of the IT Faculty. A copy of the above information should be sent to the departments within the faculty board’s area, as well as to departments in the same subject area at other universities.

The application should be submitted to the faculty office no later than six weeks prior to the seminar. A copy of the thesis shall be submitted to the IT Faculty office in conjunction with the application. When the application has been received, the faculty office will put a decision in writing regarding the presentation of the licentiate thesis.

The decision should be sent to the respondent and other recipients no later than three weeks prior to the licentiate seminar.  The thesis for the licentiate degree shall be assessed by the examiner and awarded either a pass or fail.

  5. Theses that have been awarded a pass shall be kept and catalogued in the department’s library. The thesis should also be published in digital format.
