Printing, publishing and e-publishing

Printing a thesis or licentiate

Different subject areas have different report series for their publications – contact your department prior to printing to get the correct report number. You must also check whether the thesis is to be included in a department series, in which case you need to have an ISSN number from your department.

You can order an ISBN number for doctoral theses (does not apply to licentiate theses) via the National Library of Sweden (Kungliga biblioteket). When ordering an ISBN number, the publisher is the University of Gothenburg.

A title page (“spikblad”) is also printed when the thesis is printed. This page should contain details of the time and place for the public defence of the thesis, and the title of the thesis – information regarding the faculty opponent and examiner is optional. The abstract, keywords and ISBN number of the thesis are printed on the reverse side of the title page. Take a look at how other students have arranged the printing of their theses.

You can get both the cover and inserts printed at Chalmers repro, but there are a number of other printers to choose from and the selection is determined by the agreement database for the University of Gothenburg. Contact your chosen printer no later than six weeks prior to the seminar. Remember to use a printer with which the university has an agreement, as breaches of contract can now lead to compensation claims. (However, the IT Faculty has a separate agreement with Chalmers Repro, where the cost can be invoiced internally; this is the only exception from the agreement database.)

When placing a printing order: state your name and department, as well as a buyer ID and name. Postgraduate students often do not have their own buyer ID, in which case you should contact Ann-Britt Karlsson.

Cover templates

Covers are produced in accordance with the templates below by the faculty’s Communications Officer, Catharina Jerkbrant. Space for images can be arranged on the front cover. A few days before the print day, e-mail the title, ISBN number (for doctoral theses) and any ISSN number, popular science text (max 1,400 characters incl. spaces) for the back page of the thesis, and any illustrations if required.

The sections below regarding publication and e-publication only apply to doctoral theses:

Publication of thesis

Twenty-five copies of the thesis shall be submitted to the University library porter’s office (Lundgrensgatan 1, telephone 786 1733). You will then be issued with a certificate, which should be handed over in person, together with two copies of the thesis, to Ann-Britt Karlsson, telephone 772 3523. One of the two copies is filed and the other is signed to authorise publication.

Publication is carried out in the university’s main building in Vasaparken. Further information about how publication is carried out can be obtained from the information desk, just on the right inside the main entrance.

E-publish in GUPEA

Theses at the IT Faculty are e-published in the database GUPEA three weeks prior to the public defence: instructions

Unfortunately, no automated e-mail is sent in GUP when a thesis has been published in GUPEA. You must therefore also register the publication in GUP. But if you already have e-mail in GUPEA you can use the function: “Import from GUPEA” (click on the icon in the left-hand menu in GUP), to avoid having to complete all the fields again.

Everyone with an x-account can register in GUP.
