Doktorandtjänst inom Multilingual On-Line Translation

The research will take place in the Language Technology Group at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg.

Job description

We are looking for a student with a strong interest for grammar-based high-quality machine translation in a multilingual setting (reaching up to 15 languages), and applications on the Web. The position is within the FP-7 European project MOLTO (Multilingual On-Line Translation), which involves three universities and two companies.

The monthly salary is around EUR 2350 in the beginning, 2800 in the end. The position involves 10-20% teaching, in agreement with the student. Its duration is accordingly 4.5-5 years. The start of the work will be between 1 March and 1 May 2010, in agreement with the student.

Requirements

Applicants should have a strong Master's degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or in a related field. The degree must be formally completed before the employment starts. In addition to an outstanding MSc thesis, publications are appreciated.

As for technical skills, at least a couple of the following will be needed in the work:

  •  functional programming (e.g. Haskell, ML)
  • web programming (e.g. Java, JavaScript)
  • logic (e.g. description logics, constructive type theory)
  • formal grammars of natural language (e.g. GF, HPSG)
  • a few natural languages in practice and theory
  • machine translation (rule-based and/or statistical)


Good oral and written communication skills in English are required. Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite, as English is our working language for research as well as for teaching at the master’s level.
